The five Somerset colleges offer a broad range of courses for all ages, abilities and interest groups; ranging from the new Diploma courses for 14 –19 year olds, to a choice of practical and work-based learning courses such as Apprenticeships, to AS/A levels and even the International Baccalaureate. There is provision for students needing extra help and support, right through to those with the potential to progress to Oxford, Cambridge or another of the leading universities. And with subjects ranging from Classical Civilisation to Sports Science, and Law to Veterinary Nursing, we’re sure that between us we have a course that is right for you!
Since there are only nine Somerset maintained schools with sixth forms, the majority of school leavers decide to choose to study at college. The benefits over a traditional school sixth form environment are varied; the chance to make a fresh start and new friends is often welcomed, along with the chance to study in a more diverse student population, which usually includes mature and international students.
Colleges have the resources to offer a much broader range of subjects than in a school, which are supported by specialist accommodation and equipment and expert teaching. Students also comment on the friendly and supportive learning environment that a college provides, with tutorial systems focused on individual support and guidance and helping prepare young people for their next step on to university or work. With numerous extra-curricular activities and the promise of an exciting social life, it’s no wonder so many young people enjoy learning in a Somerset college!
